What is the first joke that comes into your
mind? Do you have a favorite joke? Did you ever think about the fact that some
jokes that we find amusing might be offensive to others? In this story,
complications started with a joke.
My story dates back to primary school. I'm
sure many people have similar memories from this age. We had a group of four or
five people, we used to tease each other, poke fun, joke... I was raised in a
way that I never cared where someone came from, I only looked at what person one
was.
One day I heard a really funny joke and the
next day I thought I would tell it in class as soon as I arrived at school. And
so I did! I could barely help laughing before I started telling the joke.
The Gypsy is about to be hanged.
The hangman is asking him: "What is
your last wish, Gypsy?"
The Gypsy says: "I'd love to eat some
raspberries."
Hangman: "Are you crazy, Gypsy? It's
wintertime!"
Gypsy: "Well, I could wait."
Everyone started to laugh, me and my
friends too. There was Géza and my homeroom teacher in the room, too. Ms.
Ildikó called me to talk in private and scolded me: "It is not okay to
tell a joke like this. Géza heard it too, you might have offended him." I
didn't really understand what was so offensive in this joke, I just wanted to
make my mates laugh. I never thought that Géza might get hurt, we have never
talked about him being Gypsy before. No one cared about it, I didn't care
either.
But I didn't want to hurt him, so I asked
him to talk in private and I apologized. I explained that I had no bad
intentions and I hoped that we could stay friends. He forgave me and it had no
further consequences. As a child I didn't realize what a terrible situation I
could create for others with a joke. Now that I am an adult, I try to raise my
children to be accepting and open-minded people.
The participants presented a scene in the
frame of the Roma Heroes workshop run by Independent Theatre in Dunaföldvár.
